Griff Lynch
The front man of influential Welsh psych pop band Yr Ods has decided to venture upon a solo career – please give a warm welcome to Griff Lynch! Lynch has been working on new material for over a year, and has decided to release the material as a solo artist rather than with his band Yr Ods. Although Lynch has released a couple of songs as a solo artist before, the single ‘Hir Oes Dy Wên’ was his first official release, followed by ‘Don’t Count on Me’, ‘No One Cares‘ and ‘Tynnu Dant‘ in 2017.
The tracks are taken from Lynch’s forthcoming eponymous debut EP which follows on 28 September, via I KA CHING.
Perhaps telling from the titles, Lynch’s sound is bilingual and a touch on the melancholic-side, should you focus solely on the lyrics, a self-confessed “cocktail of deaths, break-ups and boredom”. Or in the case of new single ‘Tynnu Dant’, more cheerfully about “someone pulling their teeth and hair, in a maniac style, just to feel anything.”
However, Lynch undoubtedly has an ear for pop, in a deliciously left-of-centre, off-kilter way. Juxtaposed with the songs’ darker lyrical underbelly is a multi-layering of experimental beats, sparkling piano melodies and glistening – sometimes even euphoric – electronica. Lynch is a musical onion, dark-then-neon-bright, melancholy-then-euphoric, indie-then-pop, English-then-Welsh. It’s no surprise he comes from the hotbed of avant-garde, innovative and unique artists that is Wales, with comparisons already being made to the likes of Gruff Rhys, Gwenno, H. Hawkline and Cate Le Bon.
Lynch’s sound is both intelligently constructed, yet blissfully infectious. Testament to this is the press attention his early solo singles have garnered thus far, from specialist publications such as Electronic Sound magazine through to The Sun (and everything in-between).
‘Yr Enfys‘ appeared on the multi-artist record to celebrate I KA CHING’s tenth year, ‘X‘.
“It’s a modern take on the 80s that’s pushing indie pop in a direction that we can’t help love. The synth settings, the harmonies, the guitars, everything is just spot on here.” – Gigwise
“There’s much more to Griff Lynch’s latest off piste gem than meets the eye.” – Clash
“‘Don’t Count On Me‘ is a prime example of Lynch’s zany approach, bounding from modest piano into huge bolts of blown out synth. Lynch’s powerful vocal brings a splash of fitting rationality to the vivacity that invades throughout.” – Gold Flake Paint
“Griff Lynch’s sparkling new track is a rather crystal testament, of his knack for clever and softly spacey, electro-pop production.” – FAME Magazine
“Huge euphoric synths, teamed with off-kilter piano melodies and beats that display a darker lyrical undercurrent, this tune grabs you and pulls you in immediately from the outset.” – Original Penguin
“Sweet-natured electro pop confections.” – Buzz
