Cpt. Smith
Cpt. Smith have been playing together since 2015 and the band consists of Lloyd Jackson on the guitar, Jack Brown on the drums and his brother Ellis Brown on the guitar, and frontman Ioan Hazell on the bass.
Those who have been fortunate enough to witness Cpt. Smith’s live performances are well aware of their hypnotic energy. Their début singles, ‘Llenyddiaeth’ / ‘Bad Taste’ (2016) capture this intense surge of musical electricity.
The band’s first EP, ‘Propeller’ was released in late 2016. ‘Propeller’ encompasses Cpt. Smith’s lifetime as a band and discusses crucial events that have taken place, both personally and in the big bad world around them. The band’s frustrations are personified through their music and the EP reflects the powerful energy that flows out of Cpt. Smith’s live performances. Here we have punk, funk and phsychadelia influences, combined with touches of hip hop drum and bass that fuse together to create a hypnotic effect.
When discussing the themes of the EP, Ioan Hazel (main vocal and bass guitar) said: “Our themes vary – from the narcissist on the web in ‘Llenyddiaeth’ to ‘Propeller’, which discusses how the west have created all the problems that faces us, after years of mistreatment, taking advantage and pushing beliefs on eastern countries. There are multiple inspiration strands behind the songs, but we want the listeners to figure things out for themselves – so I won’t say more!”
In 2018, the band released another energetic and noisy EP called ‘Get a Car’, watch the title track’s video here.
Sywel Nyw’s remix of ‘Red Adair‘ appeared on the multi-artist record to celebrate I KA CHING’s tenth year, ‘X‘.
