Dafydd Owain
Having been part of acts such as Palenco, Omaloma, Jen Jeniro and Eitha Tal Ffranco, ‘Uwch Dros y Pysgod’ is Dafydd’s first solo venture under the (ever so slightly unimaginative) moniker of ‘Dafydd Owain’.
Discussing the album in an interview on Y Selar’s website, he described the albwm as a “bitter-sweet walk into a real-life imaginary world.
“It’s not a concept album in the sense that there is a narrative to follow throughout yet there is a ‘concept’ or maybe a deliberate context. I think that the title track sums up the concept quite well. It’s a ‘perfect’, light and innocent pop song but the words deliberately pull away from the music’s hunky-dory feeling – the verses talk about heartbreak among other darker themes. This juxtaposition exactly is the concept of the album,” he said.
In his review of the album in the summer 2023 edition of Y Selar music magazine, Gruffudd ab Owain wrote: “For me, this is a perfect example of the value of an album: a meaningful composition which should be enjoyed from its beginning to its end to lose oneself completely in the dreamy sounds. In a world that moves a hundred miles an hour, it’s a pleasure to escape to the lives and short-lived woes of the residents of Uwch Dros y Pysgod.”
