Peiriant Ateb – Y Cledrau
Y Cledrau’s debut album – ‘Peiriant Ateb’ (Answer Machine) will be released 1 December 2017 on I KA CHING records. The album will be available to download from your usual music websites on 1 January 2018.
Since August 2017, Y Cledrau have been teasing us by releasing a song a month to Radio Cymru and Radio Wales. ‘Cliria Dy Bethau’ (Clear Your Things) was Track of the Week on Radio Cymru in September and ‘Swigen o Genfigen’ (A Bubble of Jealousy) was played as part of Bethan Elfyn’s mix tape on Radio 6.
Whilst chatting to the band about the process of recording the album, Marged Gwenllian (bas) commented; “It was a shock to have been able to completed the album on time! Every part of the process was much smoother than when we recorded our EP – maybe this is down to experience, or I think it was much easier to be ‘in the flow’ whilst recording over a certain period of time, instead of snatching a couple of hours here and there! We worked again with Ifan and Osian (Candelas) and they by now have a proper studio called ‘Stiwdio Drwm’. Much better than recording in a shed or garage, like we did with the EP!”
“Our sound is still the same in essence,” Josef (main vocals, guitar) commented, whilst discussing the relation between the album and the EP, ‘Un Ar Ôl Y Llall’. “The main difference was to have that time to develop our sound. We’ve stayed faithful to our musical roots, but we’ve had that time to experiment. ‘Ciria Dy Bethau’ and ‘Peiriant Ateb’ are typical examples of our writing style, but ‘Fy `Nabod I’ (Knowing Me) is much heavier whilst ‘Swigen o Genfigen’ is more poppy.”
Y Cledrau have a knack of devising creative song titles, for example, the first track of the album is called ‘Roger, Rodger!’. The song discusses an aeroplane accident, when a pilot got in to trouble above Llyn Maelog in 1965, and plummeted in to the depths of the lake. Apparently, his body is still there, and the band have been imagining what kinds of things he’s been able to hear over the years!”
