Breuddwyd Brau – Melda Lois
I KA CHING Records is delighted to release Melda Lois’ third single, ‘Breuddwyd Brau‘, on the 5th of April 2024.
‘Bonne Nuit Ma Chérie’ and ‘Tofino’ have already been released, and are a striking preview of Melda Lois’ upcoming EP which will be released on the 3rd of May exclusively on Bandcamp to begin with. Lois’ next single combines her creative influences but also the scientific ones that come from having studied psychology for several years.
Lois explains: “‘Breuddwyd Brau‘ is about grief, longing and memory. The idea that people are still alive in the memory is one that gives me a lot of comfort when grieving. But again, memories are such fragile things, which are very open to being changed every time we revisit them. The truth of memories therefore falters as we spend more time with them.
I often find myself longing for sweet memories with the people I have lost. On one hand, the song conveys the comfort that comes from doing that, and the feeling of being grateful to be able to feel close to the people who are no longer with us, but on the other hand, the song acknowledges the fragile nature of our memories, and how that comfort often comes from memories that may not quite convey the past exactly as it was.”
Lois has chosen to display the work of Mirain Alaw Jones, or Medr Mir, once again for the cover of the single. Lois says: “A view of Aran Benllyn from Llyn Tegid is quilted behind me on the cover. Every time I’m home, it makes me feel more nostalgic for the past. I used a scene that is very connected with ‘home’ for me, but in a layered way that makes the boundaries more blurred as it felt like a good way to convey the idea behind the song.”
Lois grew up in Cwm Croes near Llanuwchllyn, and has made quite a name for herself over the past year, gigging regularly all over Wales. She came to prominence after two of her songs reached the final of the Cân i Gymru competition in 2021. Lois was one of the BBC Horizons Launchpad Fund 2023 awardees, shortlisted for Gwobrau Selar’s ‘New Artist Award’ and was also among the final four in the Battle of the Folk Bands at last year’s National Eisteddfod.
